Liverpool suffered more European heartache after their hopes of UEFA Youth League glory were ended in Portugal.

A strike from Rodrigo Ribeiro 17 minutes from time consigned the young Reds to a 1-0 quarter-final defeat against Sporting Lisbon here at the Stadium Aurelio Pereira on Tuesday afternoon.

It was the third timeLiverpool- who lost Ben Doak early on with a suspected concussion - have fallen at the last eight in the competition. But they exited with their heads high after a defiant performance that perhaps deserved more reward.

With Lewis Koumas suspended and both Oakley Cannonier and Trent Kone-Doherty injured, Liverpool were forced to be creative with their forward line. Doak and Melkamu Frauendorf were positioned out wide with James McConnell tasked with arriving through the centre from an advanced midfield role.

Liverpool are out of the UEFA Youth League after a 1-0 quarter-final defeat at Sporting Lisbon.

They lost Doak very early on but put in a real good display but, once again, wasnt quite meant to be in this competition.

Figueroa booked for a silly challenge from behind on Batista.

Liverpool have four minutes of additional time in which to find an equaliser.

Muniz with a superb tackle to prevent Figueroa scoring. Huge intervention to thwart the Liverpool substitute.

Only five minutes now remain, with the young Reds losing 1-0.

Sporting go close as Liverpool start to commit more players forward.

Figueroa, playing down the middle of the attack, has made a difference already.

Stephenson very close to levelling with an angled piledriver that beat Sporting goalkeeper Callai but also the far post.

The young Liverpool side have 12 minutes to level.

Figueroa, a player in form, comes on for Liverpool. He places Young on 73 minutes.

Davies fails to reach a corner from Sporting but the home team cant capitalise at the far post. Big let-off for Liverpool.

They are 1-0 down with 19 minutes to go.

Corness was booked after the Sporting goal, presumably for complaining.

Then Cruz was booked for Sporting for a clear handball.

Sporting go ahead against the run of play.

A long ball over the top is reached by Ribeiro first and Jonas appeared blocked as he tried to get back to defend, but the goal is scored and stands.

Big chance for Liverpool as Frauendorf robs Batista of possession and has a close-range angled shot saved by Callai.

The attack continues, and the goalkeeper then fumbles a shot from McConnell and just about gets to the loose ball first.

Clark getting a ticking off from the referee after one moan too many at Liverpool being penalised.

Matters becoming a little more tense now. Still goalless coming up to the hour.

Another Sporting booking, this time Marques for a little tug.

Jonas with a thundering challenge on Cabral which took the ball, the man and probably half the pitch. The Sporting man stayed tackled.

Both teams clearly putting a lot of effort into the second half already, without any major chances to speak of.

Liverpool doing plenty of running and Barry Lewtas is likely to turn to his substitutes in the next 15-20 minutes or so.

The second half is underway here in Lisbon.

Insane soundtrack update: they are now playing some variation on the Roberto Firmino song. This is quite the album they have got hold of

Half-time and Liverpool have overcome the massive blow of losing Doak inside just eight minutes with a good display.

They were the better team overall first half but Sporting had two big chances before break.

Still very much in the balance here. Goalless.

Davidson booked for a high boot on Moreira although Liverpool get the throw.

Another Sporting chance, this time a backheel from Justo puts Moreira in again but Davies does well to get down and save to his left.

Big chance for Sporting. A lucky break allows Ribeiro to head on for Moreira to have a clear shot on goal, but drags it wide of the far post.

Liverpool still goalless on 42 minutes.

Justo booked for a tug on McConnell.

The Liverpool midfielder has put in a real stint in his unusual hybrid position so far.

The game has entered a bit of a scrappy period with both teams giving the ball away too easily.

Sporting goalkeeper Callai dicing with danger a bit but Young cant quite cut out the pass in front of goal.

McConnell finds a bit of space but thumps well over from 25 yards with two Liverpool team-mates calling for a pass left.

Half a chance for Liverpool as the ball drops to Stephenson in the area from a deflected cross but the shot on the turn is blocked.

Still goalless and now in the 27th minute.

Liverpool have regrouped after that early setback and have forced a number of corners and free-kicks around the Sporting area.

The delivery from Corness has been good but Sporting have done well to defend them.

Its all gone a bit quiet since that substitution.

No major chances to speak of, apart from that header for Sporting which went over the bar.

Liverpool trying to create chances but are struggling to get through Sportings defence.

First chance for Sporting as Justo drops a header on to the roof of the net from a left-win cross.
